Jamie Colwell knows the impact a little kindness can have.
That’s because it wasn’t all that long ago that he was in need and had to access the food bank.
“I’ve had people give to me,” Colwell said. “We need to be compassionate toward people who use the food bank because you never know who is. It’s not always someone you’d expect.”
Colwell’s determination to give back started in 2020 during the height of the pandemic. It was during this time that he saw that the Cambridge Food Bank needed peanut butter. With some time on his hands due to COVID-19 restrictions, he jumped into action.
“I wanted to help any way I could,” he said. “My initial goal was to collect 150 jars of peanut butter. By the time I was done, I had over 700.”
While speaking with the executive director of the food bank, Dianne McLeod, at a business networking integration meeting recently, Colwell found out the food bank was now in need of fruit cups and nut-free bars. McLeod explained that they were at the point where they had to take the items off the shelf to make sure they had enough for children going to school.
“I had an opportunity and I said, ‘I’m doing this,’ and just started asking,” Colwell said. “My friends Rav and Irindeep, who own BNI Southwest, have been helpful. I want to collect one skid of fruit cups and one skid of nut-free bars to deliver to the food bank.”
