Be vigilant and do not fall prey to online scams, KL folk urged

POLICE are urging the public to be more vigilant and avoid falling victim to online scams.

In an effort to raise more awareness on the matter, the Jinjang police station and People’s Volunteers Corp (Rela) personnel distributed pamphlets at the Jinjang Utara morning market in Kuala Lumpur. The pamphlets highlighted the different tactics used by scammers.

Sgt Major Hasril Abu Hassan said the Jinjang police station was collaborating with the Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) on this campaign.

“We chose this morning market as the first location for our awareness campaign because we can reach out to a lot of people here,” he said.

He also urged the public to come forward if they received any suspicious calls or messages from government officials.

“We encourage people to check with the respective agencies to find out if these calls are genuine,” he said.

Kepong Community Service Centre head Yee Poh Ping, who was present at the distribution event, advised the public not to entertain random call or text message they receive.

“If someone were to contact you over government-related matters, they would do so by either asking you to meet them or they would send their requests in black and white.

“Official matters would not be discussed over calls, so take note,” said Yee.

He said it was important to just hang up the phone if one received a scam call.
