eBay Protects Seller from Bad Buyer’s Credit Card Chargeback

I am a long time reader. I have an issue I think many readers will find interesting. And concerning.

I have been an eBay seller for 22 years. It seems I have had more buyer related issues in the past year than in the previous 21 years combined. Here’s the latest one.

I listed a brand new, brand name (redacted) on eBay for $500. It sold pretty quickly to a 119 feedback eBay member of 6 years tenure. He even listed a business on his eBay “About Me” page. 

He paid immediately via eBay managed payments and I shipped the product immediately via FedEx, insured, with signature confirmation. The package was delivered and signed for 3 days later by the eBay member. 

Six days after delivery, the buyer opened an eBay Payment Dispute claiming “The buyer did not recognize the transaction.” When I received notification of the dispute, eBay also informed me “You’re covered by our seller protection.”

Two months later I was informed the buyer’s credit card company had decided the charge dispute in his favor, but that eBay was covering the loss under Seller Protection.

So here’s the summary. An experienced eBayer orders an expensive item. It is shipped with signature confirmation to his eBay confirmed shipping address. Six days later, I am informed of a chargeback because the buyer does not recognize the transaction. Two months later, I am informed the buyer’s credit card company found in his favor. He keeps the $500 (redacted) and gets a full refund.
