COVID infections in the Bay Area are finally dropping, and yet at the same time, five counties have fallen into the CDC’s highest risk category. Since the pandemic began, COVID-19 has claimed nearly 8,500 lives in the Bay Area.

Cases down, hospitalizations up as the U.S. aims to steady latest surge

The United States may be seeing some reprieve from the climb in coronavirus infections the 7-day moving average of daily new cases for the week ending Friday decreased by about 11% compared with the previous week, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. But COVID-19 hospitalizations, which typically lag cases, continue to tick up with a 4% increase week-over-week. The nation is averaging nearly 250 confirmed virus deaths per day.  According to federal metrics, about 7.45% of counties in the U.S. have high COVID-19 community levels, including most of the Bay Area counties. CDC recommends indoor masking at that level. Another 23% of counties have a medium community level. Vaccination uptake has flatlined with 67% of the U.S. population fully vaccinated.
