Kolkata: The special CBI court in Alipore on Monday sentenced Debatosh Chanda, former manager of the New Alipore branch of a nationalised bank, to five years’ imprisonment for providing loan to a fictitious person and causing loss to the bank. Chanda was also fined Rs 57,000. Indrajit Chatterjee, proprietor of a lower range, Kolkata-based company, has also been sentenced to five years’ imprisonment in the same case.
Based on complaints, the CBI had in 2001 registered a case against the accused. “They entered into a conspiracy and, in furtherance to the said conspiracy, allowed the private person to avail Rs 12 lakh by way of creating a bogus loan account without execution of any document. This caused a loss of around Rs 12 lakh to the bank,” said a CBI official.
The charge sheet in the case was filed in November 2002.
