£150 energy council tax rebate is a dream come true for scammers as fake calls soar, consumers warned

Scammers are attempting to trick people by cold calling them and asking for their bank details so they can receive the Government’s £150 energy rebate.

The one-off council tax rebate is available to most properties in council tax bands A to D to help people cope with the spiralling cost of living prices.

However, criminals are targeting people at a time when many families are struggling by calling them pretending to be a Government representative offering to pay the rebate.

A warning has been issued by the Local Government Association (LGA), alerting people to be on their guard against such scams and reminding them that councils will not ask for bank details over the telephone.

All households who pay council tax by direct debit will receive the payment directly into their bank account while those who don’t pay by direct debit will be sent a letter with details on how to claim.

Anyone who unexpectedly receives a text, email or telephone call seeking information or payment is warned to refrain from giving out personal information, including bank details, clicking any links or responding until they can be sure it is genuine.

If in doubt, they should find the correct contact details online of the organisation claiming to be in contact and check with them directly.
