Woman scammed out of R2 000 in Bitcoin mining scam

Police have warned the community about an increase they have seen in fraud involving digital currencies.

Linden police spokesperson Sergeant Takalani Sibiya said in a particular incident, a Fontainebleau resident was scammed when she thought she was involving herself in Bitcoin mining.

“She saw a post from her friend’s Instagram account about investing [in] Bitcoin mining, it showed a R70 000 [income] and that she [friend] paid R7 000.
“The friend told her to contact somebody who will explain more about it. The complainant contacted that person who sent a list of investments and earnings. The complainant deposited R2 000 to an account and later when she checked on her friend’s profile, she found that her pictures had disappeared.”

The friend’s account apparently had been hacked and an unknown person had made the post about Bitcoin mining and led the complainant on.

“The Linden police would like to warn the community to be more careful when [purchasing] stuff online as there is a lot of scamming and fraud happening.”
