Pueblo police are making the community aware of a phone call scam in which the scammer pretends to have kidnapped a victim’s loved one and demands a payment to secure their release.
In the scam, a man calls from the phone number 719-220-9177, says he is associated with “the cartel,” and has one of the victim’s family members, usually a woman, according to a Pueblo Police Department post on the social media website X.
Police say the caller will claim the victim’s family member owes the cartel money and request a cash payment to release the person being held. Later in the conversation, the caller instead asks for a money order.
“Do not send the person money,” police officials wrote. “These incidents have proven to be false. We encourage everyone to be aware of this scam. If you suspect someone has been kidnapped, please contact the Pueblo Police Department or your local law enforcement agency to file a report.”
Here’s how you can file a report with Pueblo PD:
- In person at 200 South Main Street (lobby hours 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday)
- In an emergency, dial 911
- For non-emergency reports, call 719-553-2502
- Online at pueblo.policetocitizen.com.
Pueblo police did not immediately respond to a request from the Chieftain for additional information.
